CHRISTMAS cakes form the centre piece of many dining tables – but many of the cake drums on which the nation’s larger cakes sit will generally end up in landfill. Well, it doesn’t have be that way… Sirane launched cake boards to the market and earlier this year we also added fully recyclable plastic-free cake-drums. Available in a range of pearlescent coatings – including gold and silver – as well as in a range of Pantone colours (some are subject to minimum order quantities), they are a great way of improving the sustainability credentials of shop-bought cakes. Ross Griffin, director of board products, said: “Shoppers buy millions of pounds worth of Christmas cakes every year – often spending a lot of money for that perfect cake. “But the cake drums used invariably cannot be recycled easily, if at all, and are just destined for landfill. Sirane has developed a solution to this unnecessary waste. “Our cake-drums are coated board, with an eco-friendly water-based coating offering a grease a moisture barrier, which can be easily recycled with paper/cardboard.” Our Earthboard Cake-Drums are available from 6in to 12in in diameter, and in 4500 and 6000 micron – suitable for even the heaviest of Christmas cakes. Sirane launched a fully recyclable cake-board to the market earlier this year – and we then added custom printed cake-boards to our recyclable offering. Traditional cake-boards are either foil-backed or lined with plastic to give the required grease/moisture barrier – but Sirane developed a cost-effective alternative. Our Earthboard Eco cake-boards are barrier-coated boards. The eco-friendly water-based coating gives the boards the required grease/moisture barrier – but crucially the board can easily be recycled in the paper/board recycling stream. And those recyclable cake-boards can be offered with custom printing – perfect for Christmas, when companies want their products to be that bit extra special. Many of these will use cake-boards, and the vast majority – if not all – will currently end up in landfill or incinerated. “We can supply a recyclable alternative, which does the same job, at virtually the same cost – in fact in some cases, we can actually offer a cost saving. “This is a sustainable, plastic-free, recyclable packaging solution which functions in exactly the same way and offers a range of additional branding options. “Now we’re able to offer printed boards, offering customers a chance to get creative – festive designs on the cake boards will really make products stand out on the shelf.” The new Earthboard Eco cake-boards are available in pearlescent coatings, including silver, gold and black, as standard. We can also supply any Pantone colour subject. Standard sizes are 6in, 7in, 8in, 9in, 10in, 11in and 12in, circular and square. However, we can supply any size/shape as required. We can also supply patisserie boards. Our Earthboard Eco cake-boards are 1550 micron (approximately 1.5mm) and we can also offer a double thickness board, which is 3100 micron (approximately 3mm).
