Cleveland OH, June 13, 2023 – According to a new study by The Freedonia Group,
US Disposable Straws
, demand for molded fiber straws is forecast to increase 17% annually to $38 million in 2027. Molded fiber straws are the newest option to enter the market and still account for a very small share of the overall disposable straw market. Molded fiber straws will see increasing use due to their strong environmental profile and good performance, along with their unique aesthetic. However, high pricing remains an issue that will prevent more widespread adoption, especially among large users in the foodservice market.
Molded fiber straws are not yet used in a widespread manner by any large national foodservice chain; however, they may be found at independent restaurants and hotels looking for a unique alternative to traditional plastic straws. Some examples include:
- specialty drink establishments (e.g., smoothies, bubble tea)
- high-end hotels and resorts
- restaurants emphasizing nature or sustainability as part of the dining experience
Demand for molded fiber straws in the consumer market is supported by a boost in e-commerce sales and consumers who seek an environmentally friendly alternative to plastic straws that offers adequate performance.
There are currently no molded fiber straws used in the beverage packaging market.
