Major retailers seem to be in agreement to hold off on early Black Friday shopping this year, and indefinitely into the future, as they invite customers and employees to spend time with their families. The trend for retailers to close on Thanksgiving Day was started by Walmart in 2020 during the pandemic, leading other retailers, who had traditionally remained open to offer exclusive early holiday shopping deals on the day, to follow suit. Now in 2022, that same retail giant's CEO has called Thanksgiving Day shopping "a thing of the past," which could be the nail in the coffin for the practice going forward. The following is a nonexaustive list of companies who will close on Thanksgiving Day: The following stores plan to remain open on Thanksgiving, though they may not offer special deals and hours may vary: Lists compiled from RetailMeNot, BlackFriday.com and Business Insider.
The decision comes amid a confluence of different factors, including supply chain issues, labor constraints, and of course inflation, which is not only spiking input costs for retailers, but is also encouraging consumers to be more deal-hungry and to spread out their holiday shopping over a longer period of time instead of concentrated on just one day.
