Design firm harnesses the power of mealworms to create circular PS alternative

Polystyrene (PS) is notoriously difficult and uneconomical to recycle, filling up landfills at an unsustainable rate. With the circular Chitofoam system, PS packaging could one day become a relic of the past. The system—created by Charlotte Böhning and Mary Lempres, who make up the design duo Doppelgänger—transforms the exoskeletons of plastic-eating mealworms into a biodegradable and compostable PS substitute, they explain in an interview with Designboom. The material is shock-absorbent, lightweight, water-resistant and suitable for food applications. Moreover, it is versatile enough to be molded into various items, including cups, packing peanuts and other shapes. The development of Chitofoam comes after a 2015 Stanford University study found that mealworms could safely eat, and thus biodegrade, PS. Chitofoam was recently selected for a 2022 Lexus Design Award for its eco-friendly attributes. And now, the designer duo is pushing Chitofoam even further, designing packaging that is more efficient with lattice-structured forms to preserve and protect products.

Pop-up restaurant to feature NFT-inspired packaging

While non-fungible tokens (NFTs) only exist in the digital realm through blockchain, they will soon be celebrated in tangible forms by way of foodservice packaging. The basis of this celebration is the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC), one of the most sought-after NFT digital art collections in the world. The holder of BAYC, restaurateur Andy Nguyen, decided to take advantage of BAYC’s popularity by launching a pop-up burger restaurant called Bored & Hungry. Everything from French fry packs, burger containers and soda cups, to store branding and employee uniforms, will feature the ape characters, according to Trend Hunter. In a March 17 Instagram post, Nguyen explained: "The intention of this project is to give to the Web3 community, as well as a place to educate those skeptical about this new world. Our goal and purpose are to bridge the digital world with real-life experience." Bored & Hungry is slated to open April 9 in Long Beach, California.

CCL Container launches aluminum wine bottle with classic shape

A burgundy wine bottle is recognizable for its taper at the top and extra width at the bottom, making it an elegant glass construction. Inspired by this shape and with an eye toward sustainable innovation, CCL Container recently unveiled an aluminum wine bottle shaped like a classic burgundy. More than just a new take on materials, the bottle weighs less than its glass counterpart and is virtually unbreakable, according to the company. Designed with CCL Container’s BodyShapes shaping technology, the 750 ml bottle is resealable with a threaded cap that can keep wine fresh for longer than a traditional glass bottle. The packaging can also cool quickly and stay cooler for a longer period of time than glass or plastic, as aluminum offers higher thermal conductivity and chill retention. And because the threading in the cap contains no plastic, the bottle is 100% recyclable. CCL says the burgundy-shaped aluminum bottle also enables wineries to take advantage of design options beyond paper labels. Such options include multi-color lithography in up to nine colors, embossing and debossing of graphics and logos, and a variety of finishes.
