July 19, 2023 (press release) –

We are very pleased to present our fourth edition Geospatial Conservation at The Nature Conservancy Annual Report & Map Book. Every year The Nature Conservancy (TNC) compiles conservation stories that specifically leverage our geospatial work across the organization. Geospatial technology, the combined disciplines of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing and machine learning has informed TNC’s conservation science and planning strategies for decades. With this edition, we focus on how technology and data are supporting the organization’s 2030 goals for freshwater. A few highlights include:
  • A tribute to Jonathan Higgins, our beloved freshwater ecologist who passed away last year
  • A strategic focus on our 2030 goals for freshwater
  • Results from our annual survey that reached over 1,500 staff
  • TNC’s geospatial conservation science in action with a feature story in the Amazon Basin
  • A river ecosystem global analysis that summarizes rivers in crisis and those that are free-flowing with opportunities for conservation actors to respond
  • Lake Tanganyika Basin map spotlight
  • Further advancing our work in conservation accounting with geospatial systems

“The Nature Conservancy has come a long way regarding our freshwater ambitions, projects and the influence of our strategies and innovations. For the first time, we have tangible, organization-wide, numeric freshwater goals that are driving our collective impact.”

-Nicole Silk, Global Director of Freshwater Outcomes

We hope you find this fourth edition inspiring and insightful in how the organization is leveraging conservation science and geospatial work to inform our conservation actions and help accomplish our 2030 goals.
