Unicharm Corporation (CEO & President, Mr. Takahisa Takahara) is pleased to announce that we have initiated efforts to reuse plastic discharged in the manufacturing process. This initiative is being carried out in collaboration with The Pack Corporation (President & CEO, Mr. Hideaki Yamashita), Fukusuke Kogyo Co., Ltd. (President, Mr. Yuji Inoue) and our subsidiary, Cosmotec Corporation (President, Mr. Michiaki Hashimoto). Our sanitary napkins and diapers, which are manufactured by our company, utilize plastic in the form of molded film for product materials and packaging. During the manufacturing process, surplus materials called “trim loss” are generated when removing unnecessary parts. Previously, these trim losses were disposed of, but we have decided to embark on recycling initiative to convert them into recycled materials and transform them into poly bags. In October 2020, we announced our medium-to-long term ESG goals, “Kyo-sei Life Vision 2030,” and have set “reducing plastic usage” as one of the key themes. We have committed to the goal of reducing the proportion of virgin petrochemical-derived plastics used by 50% by 2030 (with the base year being 2020). The recycling of trim losses into poly bags, as part of our activities, aligns with these efforts. Furthermore, we plan to start utilizing the recycled poly bags in some of our products from November 2023. Contributing to the 17 SDGs through Reusing Discharged Plastic in the Manufacturing Process Unicharm believes that this activity will contribute to the following goals of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations in 2015. 7.Affordable and Clean Energy 9.Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure 12.Responsible Consumption and Protection 13.Climate Action 14.Life Below Water 15.Life On Land We will continue to contribute to the achievement of the SDGs by solving environmental and social issues through our business activities, including the provision of products and services.
