PARANÁ, Brazil , March 24, 2022 (press release) –

In 2021, we made progress in the efficient use of water, the Company reused more than 42 million liters of rainwater at the Puma Unit, while the Monte Alegre Unit reduced water use by 11% in the last 5 years

On World Water Day, celebrated on March 22, Klabin, the largest producer and exporter of packaging paper and paper packaging in Brazil, reinforces its commitment to implementing initiatives that conserve this resource, essential for the maintenance of life on the planet. The Company highlights its pioneering spirit in the use of Hydrosolidarity Forest Management, a strategy based on the balance between forest production and water availability, including neighboring communities, small rural properties, in addition to ecological processes, thus avoiding a significant impact on watersheds.

Taking care of water conservation is something that Klabin has been doing for a long time, most notably since the 1980s, by measuring 100% of the resource's abstractions daily, in order to guarantee its availability. Since then, it has reduced more than 60% of the specific use of water at the Monte Alegre Unit, in Paraná. In addition, from 2017 to 2021, the unit also reduced its local water use by 11%. Comparing the year 2021 with the year 2017, the Unit saved more than 4 million cubic meters.

Another good example is at the Puma Unit, also in Paraná, with a drop of almost 10% in the specific use of water between 2018 and 2020, when the company launched its Klabin 2030 Agenda, with the definition of the Klabin Goals for Sustainable Development, the KODS. At the Puma Unit, 42.2 million liters of water were reused from the collection and reuse of rainwater. In the Puma II Project, which consists of an expansion with two new paper machines, the technology used in the first of them stands out: the MP27, which started its operation in August 2021, uses less energy and requires less water replacement in the circuit , making it more sustainable equipment. In addition, the volume of water and effluent from the machine is also much lower, another sustainable advantage of the new equipment.

The Lages unit, in Santa Catarina, also reuses rainwater; and the Angatuba Unit, in São Paulo, is working on a project with the same purpose. Thus, in 2020 (last public data available) the volume of recirculated and reused water at Klabin represented around 2.2 times the volume of raw water captured. In addition to these initiatives, Klabin became the first Brazilian company to simultaneously achieve three FSC® certifications: Biodiversity Conservation (ES1), Carbon Sequestration and Storage (ES2) and Services in Hydrographic Basins (ES3). The recognition was confirmed after an audit carried out by the Forest and Agricultural Management and Certification Institute (Imaflora) at Fazenda das Nascentes, located in the Private Natural Heritage Reserve (RPPN) Serra da Farofa Complex, in Santa Catarina.

The Company has three goals included in the KODS, until 2030 and related to the theme: 100% of the locations where it operates with initiatives to increase territorial water security (52% already achieved); 100% of forest operations under its own management with hydro-solidarity management (79.7% already achieved) and a 20% reduction in the specific consumption of industrial water (18% of the target achieved)”.

“Water is a fundamental resource for Klabin and it is not possible to produce pulp and paper without it, so it is necessary to take very good care of the resource. For this, we believe and invest in innovation, research and new technologies, because it is through these actions that we will increasingly be able to implement sustainability in our processes, preserving the environment and well-being of the communities where we operate”, says Júlio Nogueira. , Klabin's Sustainability and Environment manager.

In addition to the expressive results, Klabin was the first company in Latin America to have achieved, in 2021, the “Triple A” category of the CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project), classified at the “A” level for climate change, water security and management programs. of the forests.
