Details and developments on the newest stress crack resistance testing method for HDPE geomembranes will be revealed at an IGS Technical Committee on Barrier Systems (TC-B) webinar this month.

Geotechnical engineer Helmut Zanzinger, who is currently the head of German geosynthetics testing and research company SKZ, will speak about ‘Strain hardening testing of HDPE geomembranes’. Mr Zanzinger has been involved in geoenvironmental and geosynthetics testing for more than three decades and he is also a member of the IGS Council.

HDPE, or high density polyethylene, geomembranes are used in an extensive range of water containment applications. However, due to its high density, HDPE is susceptible to stress cracking. For three decades, the notched constant tensile load (NCTL) test has been used to distinguish between products vulnerable to stress cracking and those that are more resistant. Now, new testing method EN 17096 aims to improve the efficiency of measuring the stress crack resistance of materials.

Mr Zanzinger’s talk will share the background and outcome of EN 17096, which was developed by CEN TC189, the technical committee for the European Standardization on Geosynthetics.

The webinar takes place on August 17 and is repeated on August 23. Register as follows:

For any questions about the webinar, contact TC-B secretary Amir Shahkolahi at amir@globalsynthetics.com.au. You can also visit the TC-B web page here to find out more about the Committee’s activities and initiatives.
