UPM Kymmene can now begin the testing phase for pulp production equipment at its new pulp mill in Paso de los Toros, Uruguay, after it received approval from the Uruguayan environmental authorities for its commissioning plan. Pulp production is scheduled to begin at the end of Q1 2023 at UPM's new 2.1-million-ton-per-year eucalyptus pulp mill. UPM will conduct mechanical, hydraulic and efficiency testing and will adjust various production equipment throughout 2022 leading to the start-up of the mill early next year. The company will carry out thorough reviews of all areas of the pulp mill to verify their components and operational requirements and prepare for full production operations. UPM currently has four pulp mills – Fray Bentos, Kaukas, Kymi and Pietarsaari – with a combined output capacity of 3.7 million tpy. UPM's Paso de los Toros pulp mill will increase its overall pulp capacity by more than 56 percent. The company has also invested US$280 million to build a new port terminal in Montevideo, which will have the capacity to handle around 2 million tons of pulp per year. Eucalyptus pulp from UPM's mill will be shipped from the port terminal to customers around the world. The primary source for this article is Euwid, Gernsbach, Germany, published June 27, 2022.
