SAEL has completed an expansion project at the Fornaci paper mill which aimed to improve energy savings through the reconstruction of control and automation systems. The project involves the expansion of the MC1 drives, managing modifications on the DCS, implementing a complete pulp reject treatment system and upgrading the QCS for thickness and ash control. Additionally, SAEL has reconstructed the control and automation of the T3 cutter, reconstructed the consistency control system and steam fire prevention system and implemented an Out Line automatic laboratory. All changes are supervised and managed by the PM1 machine’s redundant DCS solution. The expansion has enabled the mill to better manage each liquid ring vacuum pump and run production more efficiently by setting/reproducing working setpoints from previous production runs with the click of a button. Maintenance is supported through video messages, system parameter trends and “Open Source” project software. This article contains information originally reported by PapNews Magazine.
