GreenFirst Forest Products Inc. will receive C$400,000 from the Ontario government to upgrade and increase production at its newsprint mill in Kapuskasing, the province’s Ministry of Energy, Northern Development and Mines announced on March 29. The funds will be used to upgrade the site’s operations and create 45 permanent jobs at the mill, which Green First acquired from Rayonier Advanced Materials in 2021 along with other forest products assets. GreenFirst Chairman Paul Rivett said in the government's press release that the COVID-19 pandemic had upended the North American/global newsprint markets, and that the funding would "assist in the restart of the curtailed paper machine allowing for increased production and stable jobs in Kapuskasing." The mill’s latest infusion of funds is part of a larger C$3.4 million investment plan from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) to foster economic development in Kapuskasing. In 2021, the provincial government established new programs at NOHFC to economically support rural communities.
