LONDON , March 1, 2022 (press release) –

Our team is proud to have launched its Notpla Paper - the first sustainable paper made with 30% seaweed by-product! We are launching this new innovative product in collaboration with Canopy, a solutions-driven not-for-profit environmental organisation dedicated to protecting forests, species, and climate.

What is Notpla Paper?

Notpla Paper alleviates pressure on the world's forests by using the by-products remaining from the industrial processing of seaweed.

After extracting the most valuable compounds in seaweed, up to 80% of its biomass is considered waste and thrown back to landfills or sometimes (at best) used as animal feed. By using 30% of that seaweed by-product, our Notpla Paper contributes to driving a circular economy approach. And we have big ambitions! Our objective is to produce a wood-free paper coated with our Notpla coating by 2024.

Designed to capture the essence of its origin - the ocean - our seaweed-based paper transforms a wasted resource into a quality product. Our premium paper covers many applications, from invitations and envelopes to boxes and bags. We are getting a lot of interest from the cosmetics and fashion industries. They appreciate this product's natural texture and distinctive look.

Why is Notpla Paper a more sustainable solution than other paper alternatives?

Notpla paper is synthetic-free
Due to synthetic chemicals such as PFAS, AKD or ASA[1], which are added to paper pulp, traditional paper is less biodegradable and has a greater impact on the end of life. Notpla Paper is entirely natural, free of any synthetic additives as well as recyclable and biodegradable.

Trees are being saved from being cut
Notpla Paper is even a more sustainable solution than purely recycled paper! Recycled paper demand for replacing plastic has increased dramatically, further accelerating in the past two years. There is an increasing need for large quantities of virgin paper to go through a long series of chemical procedures to fulfil demand. And this paper can't be recycled eternally. Using just 1 tonne of seaweed by-product could save up to 4 tonnes of trees being felled.

Notpla's commitment to Canopy's Pack4Good initiative
Quality environmental paper packaging doesn’t have to come at the expense of the world’s vital forests. There are other innovative solutions that exist that can change the way paper packaging is created - benefiting both people and the planet.

Notpla is committing to protect vital forests all over the planet through Canopy’s Pack4Good initiative by putting seaweed as a Next Generation solution for paper making. By joining Canopy’s Pack4Good initiative, Notpla commits to playing a leadership role in scaling alternative puIp inputs.

Pierre Paslier, our co-founder and co-CEO, emphasizes the significance of this partnership: “It is critical to understand that not all papers are equal. Consumers are pushing for more natural solutions to hit the market but the paper industry has been resistant to change. Seaweed can change the game. Canopy’s support has been key for us to understand the pitfalls of the paper industry and maximise the positive impact that we can have with our packaging.”

Canopy and Notpla will be extending their efforts to impact sustainable supply chain solutions and promote ethical practices in manufacturing. Both organisations know this is only the start of a long-term journey to put the planet first. Consequently, education among stakeholders will be key to encouraging the paper industry to take action towards more sustainable solutions.

To sum up, we'll conclude with this quote from Tamara Stark, Canopy Campaigns Director: “The companies joining Pack4Good are demonstrating the type of ‘out-of-the-box’ leadership we need to see across the board — innovative thinking to transform unsustainable paper packaging supply chains, scale-up solutions, and save forests.” At Notpla, we are ready to shake up the paper industry!
