February 21, 2024 (press release) –

The leading energy service provider GETEC and DREWSEN SPEZIALPAPIERE, a globally operating paper company producing specialty papers, recently signed contracts for a sustainable and emission-neutral energy supply for the production site in Lachendorf/Lower Saxony. GETEC is located on the premises of DREWSEN SPEZIALPAPIERE GmbH & CO. KG will build a state-of-the-art cogeneration plant based on renewable fuels, which not only generates sustainable process steam and electrical energy, but also makes a major contribution to reducing CO2 emissions.

The combined heat and power plant to be built by GETEC will represent significant progress in terms of sustainable production for DREWSEN SPEZIALPAPIERE and the CO2 footprint of the Celle district. Only renewable fuels in the form of straw and residual wood are used. A particular focus was placed on the versatility of the fuels. Up to 100% grain straw or up to 60% wood chips from residual wood can be used. With a thermal output of around 55MW, the plant will deliver 55 t/h of steam for the production of special papers and at the same time generate up to 12.5 MW of electricity for its own needs. The plant's steam turbine is designed so that more or less electricity can be generated depending on demand without affecting the process steam delivery.

GETEC Platform Germany CEO Dr. Thomas Stephanblome emphasized the importance of the project for the environment and highlighted the good cooperation: "The signing of the contract marks another milestone in our mission to advance emission-neutral energy solutions. Our GETEC approach is an acceleration program for more sustainability, which means that our customers' energy supply is one of a kind fossil fuel supply is switched to a climate-neutral solution - and this is not only sustainable, but also absolutely economical. We are proud to be making a positive contribution to the environment together with DREWSEN SPEZIALPAPIERE."

Dr. Matthias Rauhut, CEO of DREWSEN SPEZIALPAPIERE, emphasizes the importance of the CHP system for the company's goal of achieving 80% climate neutrality by 2030. “Together with investments in energy efficiency and renewable energies such as wind power and photovoltaics, the biomass power plant plays a crucial role on this path. With the chosen system concept and the variable fuel mix, we believe we are well prepared for the challenges of the energy transition and can contribute to a significant reduction in CO2 emissions.”

Commercial operation of the facility is scheduled for the third quarter of 2026.
