In the first half of 2022, the paper industry in Germany recorded a slight increase in production of 2.6 percent compared to the same period of the previous year, which was still influenced by the corona pandemic. With growth of 4.2 percent (half-yearly production = 3.3 million tons), graphic papers were the largest group of types with the strongest growth. The continuing pressure on demand for print advertising after the corona phase made itself felt here. Paper, cardboard and paperboard for packaging purposes – the largest group of types with around 6.9 million tons of half-yearly production – increased by 1.7 percent. The growth of the two smaller groups of varieties was different. Hygienic paper (735,000 tons) followed its long-term growth rate with an increase of 1.6 percent. Technical and specialty papers (758,000 tons) increased significantly. Here it was an increase of 5.5 percent. "In terms of volume, the German paper industry has recovered well from 2020 and 2021," explained the President of DIE PAPIERINDUSTRIE, Winfried Schaur, on the half-year figures. “However, in view of the impending gas shortage, companies are deeply unsettled. Nobody knows whether they will still be able to produce in autumn or winter.” A gas stop would practically bring paper production to a standstill. Numerous vital products - for example for food supply and hygiene - would then no longer be available. Printed media would also be affected by a production stop. Return
