Several European containerboard manufacturers plan to take downtime over the rest of the summer. Germany-based Leipa is pausing containerboard production amid a slowdown in demand. The company will idle its two paper machines for "several weeks in July and August," the company said. Also in Germany, Hamburger Containerboard will slash containerboard production by 20,000 tonnes in July, saying rapidly rising energy prices are making production economically unsustainable. Meanwhile, German producer Klingele also plans to idle production, but in response to staffing issues due to Covid. UK-based DS Smith will also take additional downtime from July to September – cutting output by 20,000-30,000 tonnes – to offset high production costs.
