Ence’s pulp biofactories in Navia (Asturias) and Pontevedra jointly generated in 2023 about 750,000 MWh of renewable energy from biomass in its turbines. This renewable energy generated in the company’s biofactories is equivalent to that necessary to cover the energy demand of more than 200,000 homes, or half million people. In its biofactories, Ence uses a natural and renewable product as raw material such as wood, and transforms it into a biodegradable and recyclable material, cellulose. In this process productive, the components of wood that are not used in obtaining cellulose, such as bark and lignin (a natural component present in wood that gives rigidity to the fibers cellulose), are used as a source of renewable energy. In this way it is generated, not only sufficient thermal and electrical energy to cover the needs of the plant, but also to export firm and manageable electrical energy to the grid and, thus, contribute to the decarbonization of the electric mix. The energy facilities of Ence’s biofactories have Quality Certifications according to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 Environmental standards, and are present in the Registry of companies voluntarily adhered to the European Ecomanagement and Ecoaudit Regulation (EMAS). In addition, both biofactories have obtained the Certification of the energy management system of in accordance with the ISO 50001 standard, thus demonstrating the focus on continuous improvement of aspects derived from its activity, also from an energy point of view. In all its processes, Ence prioritizes the sustainability of the biomass it manages. For this For this reason, in 2017 Ence worked with different players in the sector to develop a standard voluntary sustainability policy to ensure this responsible sourcing, and, more recently, has pioneered a new sustainability certification scheme for the biomass, SURE System, in all its facilities, including both biofactories. Ence is committed to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and with the objectives established at national and international level to fight against change climate. Thus, energy generation with biomass and lignin in its biofactories is aligned with the objectives of promoting affordable and non-polluting energy, and promoting action by the weather.
