DS Smith has reported that its Lucca paper mill in Italy has suffered a second fire within two weeks. The Aug. 4 fire broke out in the raw material yard and turned into a "major blaze," according to Italian news outlets. Fire crews from multiple cities were able to contain the blaze to the yard area, and no serious damage to the mill or machinery has been reported. The company has not provided any details about the cause of the fire or severity of the damage, both of which are still being investigated. Paper production has been temporarily stopped as a precaution, but DS Smith had already started "a gradual return back to normal paper making operations" the day after the fire, according to Euwid's citing of a company spokesperson. The Pocari mill operates two paper machines with an installed capacity 400,000 tpy of recycled corrugated case material. The mill makes brown and white-top testliner and recycled fluting grades. A previous fire had broken out at the Lucca mill's raw material yard on July 23. No injuries were reported, according to local media reports.
