As the end of the year approaches, the end of production of the eternal chemicals PFAS is also imminent. These have so far played an important role in the paper industry, particularly in the production of greaseproof papers. The upcoming regulation of the use of PFAS presents the industry with the challenge of finding suitable alternatives that meet the high requirements for grease tightness, food safety and recyclability. At the beginning of next year, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and the major US manufacturers of the chemicals have decided to phase out production and only sell off remaining quantities. Time is running out to switch to environmentally friendly and sustainable alternatives. At DREWSEN Spezialpapiere in Lachendorf, PFAS-free greaseproof papers have been successfully produced and sold under the name PROBARRIER Nature since 2017. The paper is now available from 32 g/m². “We are aware that the transition to PFAS-free paper types involves a certain amount of effort for our customers,” says Managing Director Dr. Matthias Rauhut with. “One of our strengths is to provide our customers with the best possible support and, in addition to our standard solutions, to also develop tailor-made solutions that are tailored to their individual needs.”
