TransCore's Canadian Freight Index declined 12% in April from March, rose 41% year-over-year to highest level recorded for month of April since TransCore began recording data

TORONTO , May 15, 2014 (press release) – TransCore Link Logistics Canadian Freight Index declined after March’s spike in loads. April’s load volumes fell by 12 percent month-over-month, but year-over-year volumes continued to show growth, increasing 41 percent over April 2013. These volumes are the highest ever recorded for the month of April since TransCore Link Logistics started recording data.

Available equipment postings are showing a positive trend with increases for the second consecutive month. Equipment postings rose by 10 percent in April from the previous month. Truck levels remain low compared to 2013 with a reduction of posted trucks of 12 percent year-over-year.

Notably, the equipment-to-load ratio showed an increase for the first time in four months to 1.46 from 1.17 the previous month, and from 2.35 in April 2013.

Cross-border postings accounted for 70 percent of total load volumes. Cross-border loads originating in Canada destined to the United States jumped considerably by 72 percent year-over-year. Cross-border loads originating in the United States destined for provinces within Canada were up by 23 percent year-over-year.

Intra-Canada load volumes represented 24 percent of the total volumes for April and climbed by 31 percent compared to April 2013.
