KATHMANDU, Nepal , January 27, 2014 () – The Supreme Court today continued the stay order that banned the import and trade of genetically modified seeds.

A division bench of Justices Kalyan Shrestha and Tarkaraj Bhatta gave continuity to the ban that was earlier issued on January 9 by Justice Baidyanath Upadhyay.

Advocate Arjun Kumar Aryal had filed the writ demanding ban on the GMO seeds produced by foreign companies including the United States-based Monsanto.

Aryal, in his writ, had claimed that GMO seeds cannot be reused so that farmers become always dependent on foreign companies for the seeds.
