TransCore's Canadian Freight Index set record high for December load volumes, rising 11% from November, 29% year-over-year

TORONTO , January 23, 2014 (press release) – TransCore Link Logistics Canadian Freight Index closed last year setting a record high for December load volumes. With two fewer shipping days, December’s volumes jumped 11 percent month-over-month and represented the highest month-over-month percentage change for the second half of the year. December also had the largest year-over-year increase compared to any month in 2013 surpassing December 2012 load volumes by a remarkable 29 percent.

Last year started and ended with noteworthy load volumes. Annual volumes for 2013 hit a historic high for the month of January followed by an up-and-down trend for subsequent months before ending strong with a record-breaking high for the month of December.

Cross-border postings averaged 67 percent of total load volumes.

Cross-border loads originating in Canada destined to the United States soared by 50 percent year-over-year.
Cross-border loads originating in the United States destined for provinces within Canada climbed by 16 percent year-over-year.
The top five states of origin for loads destined to Canada ordered from highest to lowest total loads were Ohio, Illinois, Texas, California and Pennsylvania.

Intra-Canada load volumes represented 28 percent of the total volumes for December and increased significantly by 30 percent compared to the same period last year.

Equipment postings were at encouraging lower levels for November and again December. The equipment postings for December fell by 16 percent compared to the previous month and were flat compared to levels in December 2012. Positively, the equipment-to-load ratio decreased significantly in December to 1.97 from 2.62 in the previous month.

Information within the freight index includes all domestic, cross-border and interstate data submitted by Loadlink’s Canadian-based customers.
