CHICAGO , January 16, 2014 (press release) – USG Corporation (NYSE: USG), a leading building products company, celebrated achievement of the prestigious Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) Star designation from the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries (L&I) and its Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) at its Auburn, Washington manufacturing plant. Officials from L&I presented the award to the Auburn plant’s 49 employees during a ceremony today, with Auburn Mayor Nancy Backus also in attendance.

The Star is the highest recognition within the Voluntary Protection Program. To achieve it, employees and management work together to implement safety and health programs and processes that go beyond standard safety regulations to further protect employees and promote safe operations. There are fewer than 2,500 worksites out of 8 million in all of the U.S. that hold the Star designation.

“We put a focus on safety every day in our work, and make sure each of our employees understand its importance,” said Tim Miller, plant manager. “We have dedicated ourselves to safety, and being recognized with a VPP Star is an honor.”

The Auburn plant, located 25 miles southeast of Seattle, was acquired by USG in 1999 and contains more than 106,000 square feet of manufacturing space. Auburn employees have an exceptional safety record, and have worked more than 1.1 million hours and 2,940 days without a lost-time injury.

“Safety is a top priority at USG, and one of our core values,” said Don Schaefer, director, Safety and Fleet Operations. “I’m proud of the Auburn plant for their hard work to achieve the VPP Star designation.”

USG is recognized as an industry leader in safety. USG was a founding member of the National Safety Council in 1914 and participates in safety measures across the country. USG’s Auburn location will be the 15th of its manufacturing plants to achieve Star status, in addition to three L&W Supply locations.
