British farm minister calls on EU to approve strain of GMO corn in a vote later this month, says such a move supported by scientific evidence; if approved, it would be first GMO food crop authorized for planting by EU in 15 years

LOS ANGELES , January 7, 2014 (Industry Intelligence) – Saying such a move was supported by scientific evidence, British farm minister Owen Paterson called on the European Union (EU) to approve a strain of genetically modified (GMO) maize in a vote later this month, Thomson Reuters Corp. reported Jan. 7.

If approved, it would be the first GMO food crop authorized for planting by the EU in 15 years, Paterson said. Monsanto Co. won approval for another insect-resistant corn variety in 1998.

The current proposal covers an insect-resistant maize developed jointly by DuPont and Dow Chemical Co..
