Smith Leonard survey finds new furniture factory orders in October 2013 up 6% year-over-year, encourages optimism that conditions will further improve

LOS ANGELES , January 2, 2014 () – The U.S. furniture industry is looking at a more optimistic outlook headed into the new year, judging from the latest monthly Furniture Insights newsletter put out by consulting firm Smith Leonard Pllc.

Ken Smith, Smith Leonard managing partner, said market conditions for home furnishing retail are good, and could further improve as consumer confidence grows, Furniture Today reported on Dec. 31.

The first 10 months of 2013 showed a 6% increase in new orders and 5% increase in shipment orders compared with the results for the same period in 2012.

U.S. furniture factory orders for the month of October were up 6% year-over-year, while shipments for the month were also up 9%, and backlogs up 11% year-over-year.
