NEUHAUSEN AM RHEINFALL, Switzerland , September 30, 2013 (press release) – It is a real head-turner, and completely different from anything that has been seen before in the beverage packaging sector: combidome, the bottle made of cardboard from SIG Combibloc. And it is on the fast track to success. At the FachPack exhibition in Nuremberg, the innovative carton pack has now been awarded the German Packaging Award (Deutscher Verpackungspreis) in the ‘Best Sales Packaging: Beverages’ category, which was this year handed out for the 50th time. The expert jury highlighted in particular the carton pack’s good pouring behaviour, and praised the optimised handling in terms of emptying out the product, compared to other beverage packaging solutions.

Axel Meier, Head of Marketing Cluster Europe North, and Olivier Peterges, Development Engineer at SIG Combibloc, accepted this special prize for combidome at the award ceremony in Nuremberg: “We’re thrilled that, after the Beverage Innovation Award, combidome has now also picked up the German Packaging Award. This demonstrates that our packaging innovation is a winner nationally and internationally. combidome is a genuinely innovative product that has huge potential to gain a real foothold in the beverage sector. That makes us very proud”.
combidome, the bottle made of cardboard from SIG Combibloc, combines the best features of a carton pack and the advantages of a bottle shape. With the centrally positioned closure and the carton pack’s special shape and stability, combidome handles like a bottle, but also offers all the proven and unrivalled benefits of a carton pack in terms of product protection and environmental advantages.

For 50 years now, the best and most innovative developments in the packaging industry have been recognised with the German Packaging Award, handed out since 1996 by the Deutsche Verpackungsinstitut (dvi, the German Packaging Institute). Award-winning developments can relate to new materials, designs, technologies, application scenarios, machines, software or market success. In determining the award-winners, the seemingly small but crucial detail is given the same importance as the major, market-wide solution.

Under the auspices of Germany’s Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Technologie), an independent jury of experts from business, research, teaching and the specialist press chooses prize-winners in six categories: sales packaging; labels, seals and other packaging aids; display and promotional packaging; transport and logistics packaging; packaging machines (engineering and technology) and young talent. The products are judged on specified criteria, including innovation, sustainability, functionality, design, cost-effectiveness, safety, process optimisation and merchandising ability.

SIG Combibloc is one of the world’s leading system suppliers of carton packaging and filling machines for beverages and food. In 2012 the company achieved a turnover of 1,620 million Euro with around 4,950 employees in 40 countries. SIG Combibloc is part of the New Zealand based Rank Group.
