CAPE TOWN, South Africa , June 26, 2013 () – Special Adviser to the Rivers State governor on Fishery, Mr. Alapuye Cotterel, has said that Nigerians consume over 1.2 million metric tons of fish annually with over 85 per cent of the number imported.

Cotterel told journalists in Port Harcourt that the administration of Governor Rotimi Amaechi decided to embark on establishment of fish farms across the state so that Nigerians will not depend so much on imported fish. "What is the fish demand of Nigerians? Nigerians consume 1.2 million metric tons of fish per annum. Out of these, we import 800,000 metric tons. As a state government, we are thinking about sustaining our demands for fish", Cotterel said.
