The “WorldStar Packaging Award“ has been the most important packaging award on a global scale for more than 40 years – making it the “Oscar” for this market segment. “We are extremely honoured to receive this award which confirms the quality of our PackDesign activities“, Matti Rovamaa, Director of the Wipak Group emphasized. “The award highlights our ambition to set the trends based on innovative packaging solutions. This also sometimes takes the courage to break new ground“. This courage has already been rewarded when Wipak received the “German Packaging Award” for its “self-talking package”.
Wipak systems teach packages to “talk”. The WPO jury of 25 was convinced of the large range of possible applications, of the added value for consumers, of the simple handling – and last but not least of the originality of the concept. Music, sound, or voice – any kind of information can be added almost invisibly at any position on the package via a special code. A special, pen-shaped reader is used to retrieve the stored information and to replay it as audio files. No RFID or microchips are required; the dot code is simply printed over images and texts by means of a special varnish. This technology can be used with all printing technologies and package types.
“This system breaks absolutely new ground for manufacturers and retailers to address their customers, supporting the demographic change and the related challenges to retailers and food producers“, said Adolf Ahrens, Director Pack Design at Wipak Walsrode.
The WPO and the WorldStar Packaging Award
The World Packaging Organisation (WPO) has been founded in 1968, combining by corporations, associations, organisations and research institutes from more than 50 countries. 316 packaging concepts from 33 countries were nominated for the “WorldStar 2013“ in seven categories: beverages, food products, cosmetics and body care, domestic cleaning, pharmaceutics, electronics and other products. Only the winners of the previous national contests are allowed to participate in the “WorldStar“ event.
