Russia and South Africa have decided to sign a memorandum of understanding between the Russian Federal Fisheries Agency (Rosrybolovstvo) and South Africa's Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in late 2012, Andrei Krainiy, Rosrybolovstvo chief, told reporters.
The two agencies plan to begin drafting the related agreement immediately after the memorandum is signed.
Russia and South Africa agreed to fight illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, engage in marine bioresources' conservation, research, aquaculture and educational projects. There are also plans for Russian fishermen increasing operations off the South African coast, the area where Russian fishermen were traditionally active but that was not much used in the past 15-20 years.
