According to a report by Reuters that cited Wal-Mart Stores Inc. Chief Financial Officer Charles Holley, Wal-Mart will increase the number of stores with self-checkout lanes without eliminating cashiers, Supermarket News reported March 7.
Currently, roughly 1,600 of the more than 3,800 U.S. Wal-Mart locations have self-checkout lanes. Approximately 80 of the 611 Sam’s Club locations have self-checkout lanes, the report said.
The report said that self-checkout lanes will be added to 220 Sam’s Club stores this year. Self-checkout lanes will also be added to an unspecified number of Wal-Mart stores.
In 2011, both Albertsons LLC and Big Y Foods Inc. announced that they were planning to purge self-checkout lanes from their stores.
