LOS ANGELES , February 21, 2012 () – South Korea-based Samsung Electronics is spinning off its LCD display manufacturing business and merging with its smaller LED display unit, the Los Angeles Times reported Feb. 21.

The changes, according to Samsung, "are essential to improve our competitiveness for our display business."

Samsung's LCD business will officially become a stand-alone corporation, owned entirely by Samsung, effective April 1.

Consumers are buying more LCD-backlighted televisions, computer monitors and mobile devices, according to the publication, and LED-backlighted screens are becoming more popular and more affordable to manufacture.
