– Home improvement company Menards Inc., believed to be the third largest home improvement chain in the U.S., has begun building stores that rival its big-box competitors in size, the StarTribune reported Jan. 28.
In 2011, Menards converted a store located in Eden Prairie, Minnesota to a 235,000 square-foot and two-floor format.
The company has also converted a store located in Golden Valley, Minnesota from 250,000 square feet to 128,000 square feet, in addition to purchasing a 2.2-acre lot for US$5 million that is adjacent to its store in Richfield, Minnesota.
Analysts report that Menards has managed to retain its family-owned reputation while building super-sized stores.
Burt Flickinger III, the managing director of consulting firm Strategic Resource Group, said that Menards has done a good job of integrating itself into the community in Minnesota.
He added, "Menards enjoys the hometown advantage wherever it goes.”
Currently, Menards operates 262 stores spread across 13 states, most of which are located in the Midwest.
