Yum brands Inc.’s Taco Bell Corp. will introduce Cantina Bell to the Louisville, Kentucky. and Bakersfield, California, markets beginning Jan. 26, Reuters reported on Jan. 20.
Cantina Bell offers menu items priced around US$5, including tacos, burritos and bowls made with fresh ingredients including cilantro rice, grilled corn salsa and black beans. Many of the items on Taco Bell’s traditional menu are priced between $1 and $3.
Taco Bell hopes the Cantina Bell items will broaden its consumer base and help spur sales for the chain. In 2011, Taco Bell sales were flat in the first quarter and fell 5% and 2% in the second and third quarters, respectively. If the Cantina Bell menu does well in initial markets, it could be introduced in other U.S. Taco Bell locations by the end of 2012.
