DALLAS , December 14, 2011 (press release) – ReportsnReports adds new market research report 'Aseptic Packaging to 2015' to its store. This study analyzes the $3.5 billion US aseptic packaging industry. It presents historical demand data for the years 2000, 2005 and 2010, and forecasts for 2015 and 2020 by product (e.g., plastic bottles, vials and ampuls, prefillable syringes, bags and pouches, cartons, cups, glass bottles) and market (e.g., pharmaceuticals, beverages, food).

US Aseptic Packaging market demand to exceed 5 billion in 2015

Demand for aseptic packaging is expected to significantly outpace the overall packaging industry and will exceed $5 billion in 2015. Growth will be driven by drug sterility requirements and ambient distribution and storage advantages for food and beverages. Gains will also be supported by growing interest in natural and minimally processed food and beverage products, as the short heating time and lower temperature of aseptic processing minimizes loss of flavor and nutrients and offers extended shelf life without preservatives.

Pharmaceutical market to see above-average growth

Above-average growth in pharmaceutical applications will be fueled by provider preferences for unit-dose and other convenient drug delivery formats coupled with the increasing availability and consumption of biotechnology-based injectable drugs and biologicals. Such drugs tend to be heat sensitive, making the high heat used in terminal sterilization processes unfeasible. In addition, gains will be supported by greater use of advanced aseptic processes, such as blow-fill-seal (BFS). In contrast to traditional aseptic processing, BFS enables the molding, filling and hermetic sealing of vials and bottles in a continuous automated process and without human intervention, which results in a high assurance of product sterility.

Gains in the beverage market will be helped by rising consumption of beverages such as protein drinks, iced coffee and smoothies, all of which tend to use aseptic packaging. Other factors driving demand will include the growing popularity of value-added beverage offerings, such as milk-based coffee drinks, in quick service restaurants and convenience stores and rising interest in aseptic packaging due to its shelf stability. This results in reduced energy use in shipping and storage as well as increased opportunities in vending machines, movie theaters and other venues with limited refrigerated storage.

Prefillable syringes to be fastest growing product

Prefillable syringes will represent the fastest growing aseptic packaging product type through 2015, the result of further introductions of biotechnology based drugs, along with safety and convenience advantages and the prevalence of chronic conditions necessitating lifetime drug regimens.

Prospects for aseptic cartons will be fueled by expanding liquid food and dairy beverage applications and favorable consumption trends in ready-to-drink nutraceutical and weight loss beverages. Other factors supporting growth will include improving aesthetics of cartons, a favorable environmental profile, the availability of cartons with closures, the quality perception of these containers, and greater openness to alternative packaging among younger consumers.

Above-average growth for plastic bottles will be the result of expanding food and beverage applications and ongoing opportunities in the pharmaceutical market. In the beverage market, increased adoption of aseptic filling of low-acid beverages to enable shelf-stable distribution and storage is anticipated. Additionally, bottle opportunities will be helped by favorable consumption trends for preservative-free premium beverages, such as fruit and tea blends, protein shakes and weight loss drinks, which can experience flavor changes and nutrient loss when exposed to the high heat of hot-fill bottling.
