– Under a new U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) proposal, companies would be able to call meat fresh or low fat without getting government permission for the labels, The Wall Street Journal reported Dec. 7.
The plan aims to reduce the USDA’s workload and limit red tape for food producers. Officials say they hope to minimize the scenarios under which companies are required to get agency approval for product labels.
The USDA said that since food companies have been pronouncing their products fresh or low fat for years, it's no longer a special statement or claim that the agency needs to verify.
If the U.S. government approves the proposed changes, the USDA estimates that it could cut US$8.7 million in costs over the next 10 years.
