Rite Aid reports same-store sales rose 1.9% year-over-year in five weeks ended Nov. 26 as total drugstore sales grew 1.4% to US$2.404B

CAMP HILL, Pennsylvania , December 1, 2011 (press release) – Rite Aid Corporation (NYSE: RAD) today announced sales results for November.

Monthly Sales

For the five weeks ended November 26, 2011, same store sales increased 1.9 percent over the prior-year period. November front-end same store sales decreased 0.6 percent. Pharmacy same store sales, which included an approximate 182 basis points negative impact from new generic introductions, increased 3.1 percent. Prescription count at comparable stores increased 0.8 percent over the prior-year period.

Total drugstore sales for the five-week period increased 1.4 percent to $2.404 billion compared to $2.370 billion for the same period last year. Prescription sales accounted for 68.0 percent of drugstore sales, and third party prescription sales represented 96.6 percent of pharmacy sales.

Quarterly Sales

Same store sales for the 13-week quarter ended November 26, 2011 increased 2.0 percent over the prior-year period. Front-end same store sales were flat compared to the prior-year period while pharmacy same store sales increased 2.9 percent. Prescription count at comparable stores increased 0.5 percent over the prior-year period.

Total drugstore sales for the 13-week third quarter increased 1.8 percent with sales of $6.289 billion compared to $6.180 billion for the same period last year. Prescription sales represented 68.7 percent of total drugstore sales, and third party prescription sales was 96.4 percent of pharmacy sales.

Year-to-Date Sales

Same store sales for the 39-week period ended November 26, 2011 increased 1.6 percent, consisting of a 0.8 percent front-end same store sales increase and a 1.9 percent increase in pharmacy same store sales. Prescriptions filled at comparable stores increased 0.4 percent over the prior-year period.

Total drugstore sales for the 39 weeks ended November 26, 2011 increased 1.2 percent to $18.901 billion from $18.686 billion in last year’s like period. Prescription sales accounted for 68.4 percent of total drugstore sales, and third-party prescription sales was 96.4 percent of pharmacy sales.
