A food law expert said the introduction of a fat tax in the U.K. could cripple some of the nation’s food and drink firms, FoodManufacture.co.uk reported Nov. 25.
The European Heart Network recently called for a fat tax, claiming that such a move is long overdue and stressing the need for decisive action to curb the risk of coronary heart disease brought about by obesity.
But the introduction of such a tax could lead to serious problems for the industry, said Nina Best, food law expert at law firm Browne Jacobson. She said the introduction of such a tax on foods would cripple certain producers.
