The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is opposing Yum! Brands Inc.’s attempt to allow low-income Americans to use food stamps at its Taco Bell and KFC restaurants, Bloomberg reported Nov. 17.
The USDA, which funds the food stamp program, is encouraging states not to allow Yum to have the stamps used at its restaurants.
Yum has lobbied government officials in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Florida and Kentucky to allow its restaurants to participate in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which is administered by the states. In the 2010 fiscal year, the program distributed a record US$64.4 billion.
