Drugstore operator Walgreen Co. spent $700,000 lobbying the federal government in the third quarter, more than twice what it spent a year ago.
The largest U.S. drugstore chain said its lobbying interests included payments for home health care services, the Medicare Part D prescription drug benefit, the military's Tricare health program, and debit card regulations. The Deerfield, Ill., company said it lobbied Congress and the Departments of Defense and Health and Human Services.
Walgreen spent $340,000 on lobbying in the third quarter of 2010 and $630,000 in the second quarter of this year. It disclosed its activity in a form filed Oct. 20 with the House clerk's office.
Walgreen runs about 7,800 drugstores in all 50 states, as well as Washington DC, Puerto Rico, and Guam.
