NextEra Energy Resources Inc. has halted the permitting process for its proposed 150-megwatt wind farm in South Dakota while it attempts to clarify “several issues, including securing a customer for the output,” according to a company statement, reported Bloomberg News on Oct. 19.
The Juno Beach, Florida-based utility told the U.S. Dept. of Energy to cancel the Hyde County Wind Energy Center’s environmental review, which was begun when NextEra applied for a permit to connect its plant to the grid.
NextEra, which is the largest wind-energy producer in the U.S., may decide to move forward with the project later, at which time it would need a new environmental review, company spokesperson Steve Stengel said in the statement.
The company has already bought land for the wind farm and completed “other environmental field work” on the project, said Stengel, according to the article, which was carried on Businessweek.com.
