Packaging for J Sainsbury plc’s brand products is to be reduced by a half by 2020 from 2005 levels under its new sustainability plan, PackagingNews.co.uk reported Oct. 17.
Among its packaging goals are using recycled and recyclable materials, working with Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) and making recycling more accessible to U.K. consumers.
The retail giant’s CEO Justin King said the targets of the £1 billion (US$1.57 billion) sustainability plan are extremely ambitious for the scale of the business.
Despite the reduction in packaging, Sainsbury’s hopes to maintain high levels of food safety while keeping food from going to waste, according to the article.
According to Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman, consumers are increasingly demanding sustainable products and practices from retailers, including reducing the amount of excess packaging.
