NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pennsylvania , September 26, 2011 (press release) – Balfour Beatty Communities, LLC announced today that its Fort Leonard Wood military housing public-private partnership (PPP or P3) project within the U.S. Department of the Army’s Residential Communities Initiative (RCI) Program will begin a redevelopment phase covering the new construction of 160 duplex homes at Fort Leonard Wood. Balfour Beatty Communities will oversee the design, construction, and overall management, maintenance and operational responsibilities for the housing units, which are expected to be completed in 2013.

“We could not have achieved this without the support of and teamwork with the Command leadership at Fort Leonard Wood,” said Chris Williams, President of Balfour Beatty Communities, “We look to begin construction as soon as possible as we are eager to deliver new high-quality, comfortable homes in keeping with our sustainable and environmentally friendly efforts.”

Balfour Beatty Communities assumed family housing at Fort Leonard Wood in July 2008. A result of various initiatives within the Department of the Army at Fort Leonard Wood and the destruction of 40 homes by a tornado in December 2010 led to the need for new construction.

The 160 new homes will be a mix of three- and four-bedroom units, with nine UFAS units. The homes, which are designated for Junior Enlisted Soldiers and Company Grade Officers and their families, are being built on an existing site known as the Woodlands where old homes were demolished in 2007. Design and appearance will complement the architectural style found at Fort Leonard Wood and every new home will include a tornado shelter in the downstairs interior bathroom. The new units will be built using hardy plank siding in the place of traditional vinyl siding, which will stand up better under local weather conditions. Several playgrounds will also be built.

To deliver the project, the Company is utilizing its strategic alliances with Pucciano & English, Inc., Architects, AIA, an Atlanta-based architectural firm, and Balfour Beatty Construction, a homebuilder providing construction services for the project, also based in Atlanta.

Maj. Gen. David Quantock, Commanding General at the Maneuver Support Center of Excellence, Fort Leonard Wood is pleased with this development. “One of my goals has been to get Fort Leonard Wood’s Family Housing on par with the standards at other Army installations and to provide our valued Soldiers and families homes and quality of life that is commensurate with their service.”
