Small package ground delivery service provider FedEx Ground, a unit of FedEx Corp., is opening a new US$100 million sorting hub in Kernersville, North Carolina, on Sept. 25, the Winston-Salem Journal reported Sept. 17.
The facility will staff 750 workers—more than the 500 originally projected for the site—and will be able to sort 15,000 packages initially. Once the hub ramps up to full capacity, it will be able to sort 45,000 packages/hour, the Journal reported.
The Memphis-based company started construction on the 400,000-square-foot facility in late 2008. The new sorting hub will be the second major FedEx facility in the area as the company already operates a $300 million cargo hub at Piedmont Triad International Airport, the Journal noted.
