Iberdrola Renewables proposing to build wind farm with 150 turbines on 20,000 acres in North Carolina's Perquimans, Pasquotank counties

RALEIGH, North Carolina , April 6, 2011 (Associated Press) – North Carolina regulators are listening to a proposal to catch the wind coming off the Albemarle Sound in a cluster of up to 150 electricity-generating turbine towers.

The state Utilities Commission holds a public hearing Tuesday about a proposed wind farm near Elizabeth City that could generate enough power for more than 55,000 homes.

The consumer advocates' section of the commission favors the project as a way for electric companies to comply with a state law requiring that one-eighth of their energy come from renewable sources within the next decade.

The Iberdrola Renewables wind farm spread across 20,000 acres in Perquimans and Pasquotank counties would be the largest electricity producer using in-state resources. All fossil fuels burned in other power plants are imported from outside the state.
