A Merritt wood producer will be supplying raw materials for the manufacture of podiums at the Olympic Games.
Aspen Planers has been selected to provide spruce. A different wood was selected from each Timber Supply Area (TSA) in the province. There are approximately 20 timber supply areas in B.C.
“What they did was they went through a whole bunch of TSAs,” said Aspen Planers Woodlands Manager Jerry Canuel. “It’s kind of cool.”
Woods selected from a TSA did not necessarily reflect the region.
VANOC has chosen to use the podiums to help showcase the forest industry in B.C.
“It’s a way of getting our little town out to the world,” said Canuel.
Aspen Planers Ltd. is a Merritt-based independent, family-owned forestry business founded in 1959 by the Ghog family. The company produces treated lumber, sorted trim ends, posts, grape stakes and rails. Aspen’s treated lumber is sold both domestically and internationally.
