DOUALA, Cameroon , March 30, 2014 () – The export of Cameroonian coffee dropped by about 50% last month compared to the same period last year, says the Cameroonian national coffee and cocoa office (ONCC).

During the period, Cameroon exported only 887 tonnes of Arabic and Robusta coffee, as against 1,643 tonnes over the same period last season.

According to ONCC, the drop in exports, which is the consequence of a drop in production, is the result "of bad weather conditions".

But other sources say that the situation could be linked more to illegal exports to Nigeria because of the bad nature of the roads which link several coffee producing zones in the country to the Cameroonian economic capital, Douala.

ONCC said national coffee production dropped by more than 56% in 2013.

To halt the slump in producti0n, the Cameroonian Cocoa -Coffee Inter-profession (CICC) launched an emergency restructuring plan estimated at 900 million CFAF over six years, from a European Union fund of 15 billion CFAF as part of the 11th European Development Fund (FED).
