North Carolina has received a donation of 1,678 acres of mountain forestland in Caldwell and Wilkes counties from Atlanta, Georgia-based Char-Lo Timberlands Llc. the Wilkes Journal-Patriot reported on Jan. 1.
Char-Lo, which still owns 200 acres of the original 1,878-acre parcel, acquired the property from Merritt Brothers Lumber Co. in 1985, according to deeds filed Monday in both counties.
The deeds show the property transferred from Newport, Washington-based Char-Lo Timberlands Inc. to Char-Lo Timberlands LLC and from Char-Lo Timberlands LLC to the State of North Carolina.
All the land surrounding the donated tract is privately owned and development on the property is limited by a conservation easement. The state has not yet disclosed any plans for the land.
