A loud noise believed to come from Pratt Industries USA's paper mill in Staten Island, New York, prompted numerous emergency calls from locals Friday evening, the Staten Island Advance reported on Dec. 27.

A worker on site explained that the sound was caused by a sudden expulsion of steam, which the worker said can happen periodically.

One West Shore resident compared the sound to a passing jet rather than an explosion. No fires or injuries were reported, noted the Staten Island Advance.

The VP14 mill, owned by Atlanta-based Pratt Industries USA, produces a variety of high-quality, 100% recycled corrugated medium and liners on technically advanced equipment, according to the company’s website.

Pratt Industries USA is a subsidiary of Melbourne, Australia-based Visy, which is owned by the Pratt family.
