Fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) like Hindustan Unilever, Colgate and GSK Consumer have hiked the prices of some their products like toothpastes, soaps, moisturisers and creams by 2-12% to offset the volatility of the rupee. For Hindustan Unilever, this will be second price hike in two months, the first was in Jul 2013 when the company increased the prices of its soap brand Dove and cosmetic Lakme by 7%. The prices of key inputs like palm oil use to make soaps and caustic soda, soda ash remained stable during 1Q 2013-2014, but are likely the prices of these inputs are likely to increase in the coming months. Godrej Consumer, Reckitt Benckiser and Wipro are expected to hike product prices. Colgate has increased the prices of its toothpaste brands Colgate Active Salt, Colgate Max Fresh and Sensodyne Rapid Relief. Procter & Gamble is expected to follow suit by increasing the price of its tooth paste brand Oral-B toothpaste.
