Malaysia-based thermoformed plastic packaging, extrusion sheets producer Lee Soon Seng Plastic plans to enter Japanese, Cambodian markets, company says; Lee Soon started US production of PLA food packaging in 2011

LOS ANGELES , October 15, 2012 (Industry Intelligence Inc.) – Lee Soon Seng Plastic Industries SDN BHD, a Malaysia-based manufacturer of thermoformed plastic packaging and extrusion sheets, plans to enter the markets in Japan and Cambodia, reported Packaging Gateway on Oct. 15.

Currently, the company is focused on emerging markets such as Myanmar, Pakistan and Portugal; and in the long-term, it expects to expand into Eastern Europe and Australasia.

Lee Soon, which is owned by Malaysia investment holding company SCGM BHD, makes biodegradable containers entirely from plant-based byproducts such as barley, tapioca and corn, Packaging Gateway reported.

The company makes polylactic acid (PLA) packaging for the food and electronic sectors, but plans to expand into manufacturing disposable medical care products, such as instrument trays and thermometer covers.

In 2011, Lee Soon started making its PLA food packaging containers for the U.S. market, reported Packaging Gateway.

Within two years, when it expects to complete its cleanroom facility, Lee Soon will be ready to enter the Japanese market, said Datuk Seri Lee Hock Seng, the company’s managing director.

Last year, Lee Soon added new thermoforming and extruding machines, which boosted production capacity and helped to incorporate more recycled materials, said Seng, Packaging Gateway reported.

The company now has 30 thermoforming and six extruding machines. More than half of its production is sold within Malaysia.

The remainder is shipped to such places as Singapore, Brunei, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Indonesia, India, Hong Kong, Macau, China, Spain, Greece, Italy, Austria, Australia, New Zealand, the U.S. and Canada, reported Packaging Gateway.
