A new range of recyclable and recycled-content food and beverage packaging is being launched in the U.K. by a partnership of Closed Loop Environmental Solutions Pty. Ltd. and Kobusch UK Ltd., reported Packaging Europe on Sept. 24.
The range will contain at least 50% recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) flake supplied by Close Loop Recycling Ltd.’s state-of-the-art used plastic bottle processing plant in Dagenham, East London.
The first products in the range, which was unveiled at the British Association for Sustainable Sport’s (BASIS) conference on Sept. 20, will be pint and half-pint sizes of PET cups made by Kobusch in the U.K., Packaging Europe reported.
The product range brings together a “collective responsibility between producers, recyclers and the hospitality industry” to promote closed-loop recycling for maximum reduction of waste going to landfills, said Peter Goodwin, U.K. country manager at Closed Loop Environmental Solutions.
Organizations like BASIS, together with advancements in the U.K.’s recycling infrastructure, have made it possible to “fully embrace packaging sustainability in sport,” Goodwin said, reported Packaging Europe.
All products in the new range will be recyclable to comply with the Closed Loop Program, which ensures that venues and events can take full advantage of the potential for recycling single-use food and beverage packaging.
Kobusch has worked with Closed Loop Environmental Solutions in a goal to use postconsumer material in single-use foodservice packaging since the Dagenham plant opened in 2008, said Mark Durston, Kobusch’s European foodservice sales manager, Packaging Europe reported.
